Privacy
FilterBox is a small box that blocks ads, trackers and dangerous sites for your home. Which sites your devices visit is recorded only on the box in your home. Nobody else, including the people who make FilterBox, can see it.
What stays on the box
- The history of which sites each device asked for, what was blocked, and the device names you choose.
- Your settings, schedules and PIN.
None of this is sent anywhere. The box's dashboard can only be opened from your home network.
What leaves the box
- Look-ups. To answer "where is example.com", the box asks a public resolver such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Quad9, exactly as your router would. They see the site name and your home's internet address, never which device asked.
- Update checks. Once a day the box asks our public release page whether a newer version exists. It sends only its version number.
- If you link the app: every few minutes the box sends our relay service the numbers shown on the app's Home screen: how many ads and dangerous sites were stopped, how many devices are protected, whether blocking is paused, and its version. No site names, no device names, no history.
- Notifications: if the box goes offline, comes back, or updates itself, the relay sends a notification to your phone through Apple's push service.
The box's dashboard, under Settings, More settings, "What leaves this box", lists everything it has sent, word for word, so you can check this yourself.
The app
The app has no account, no ads and no analytics, and does not track you. When you link it, it sends the relay the six-digit code you typed and a notification token from Apple, so notifications can reach your phone. Unlinking the phone in the app or removing it on the dashboard deletes that token from the relay.
What we keep
The relay keeps, for each box: a random identifier, the latest numbers from the list above, and the notification tokens of linked phones. It keeps no history. We don't sell or share any of it.
Children
FilterBox is set up and managed by a parent. It collects no information from children; it only sees which site names devices ask for, and keeps that on the box.
